For anyone who is willing to share I think it is worth celebrating and hearing your stories of moments that have been key to your acceptance of your sexuality or your sexual identity.
It could be a movie or seeing a gay couple, someone you knew – a friend or family – anything really.
I remember the impact and the power of story of injustice and justice with Tom Hanks in Philadelphia or the Australian movie with a young Russel Crowe, in the Sum of Us, the innocence and heartache of Mambo Italiano, the ‘regret’ and ‘struggle’ of Ennis and Jack in Brokeback Mountain – sometimes it was the connection that I felt with the characters or the struggles that I related to. Other times I felt angry with the unfairness of things that were said or done or the sacrifices made or the fear that these characters struggled with. Sometimes it was one line that I took away from a movie like Mambo Italiano when he said, “I don’t want my parents to die without knowing me“. Each of these movies began to change my perspective of what it was to be gay. What it would be like for me to accept who I am.
What are the moments of significance for you? What things in your journey formed the stepping stones towards where you are today?
Look forward to seeing you there.
