The annual Mardi Gras film festival is about to kick off again, and amongst the wide range of films featured is the world premiere of Vicky – The Gay Gene.
This new documentary from Sydney film maker Sasha Hadden follows Bishop Gene Robinson on his recent visit to Melbourne. Wearing a bullet proof vest, Bishop Robinson was consecrated as the world’s first openly gay bishop.
He was the only bishop not invited to the 2008 Lambeth Conference of Bishops, but become the only bishop Barack Obama selected to deliver the invocation at the inaugural weekend of his presidential election.
Now retired, the former Bishop of New Hampshire in the Episcopal (Anglican) Church remains a divisive figure. His recent visit to Australia was controversial, especially his well-publicised encounter with the Reverend Fred Nile on ABC’s Q&A.
As Australia struggles with issues of sexuality and faith, marriage equality and institutional child sexual abuse, this film is an important and timely contribution.
We will be heading along to view the film, and we hope you can join us. We’ll also be going for a bite to eat nearby after the film.
