Hi, I received this email today and thought that some of you may want to sign the petition. I read your discussions each week and also wanted to thank you for your honesty and insight.

Dear friends,

We’ve done the research and it’s a landslide. A GetUp-commissioned Galaxy poll last weekend reveals a whopping 71 per cent of Australians, including 63 per cent of Coalition voters, believe same s-x* couples should have the same rights as heteros-xual couples in de facto relationships.

These results should make all Australians proud. Yet on Friday, the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission released its year-long inquiry into same s-x discrimination which reveals that discrimination remains ingrained in 58 pieces of federal legislation. From superannuation and workers’ compensation to Medicare, tax and pensions, Australians are treated like second-class citizens purely on the basis of their s-xual orientation.

Right now our politicians are deciding how to respond to these damning findings. This is our urgent opportunity to tell them it’s time to wipe this discrimination off the books forever by giving legal equality to same s-x couples.

Australians want their friends, family and colleagues in same s-x relationships to have the same rights as other citizens. One piece of legislation, redefining de facto legal status, can start us firmly on the path towards greater equality.

Sometimes change can only happen when the people lead. And we will. GetUp’s poll found majority support for equal rights extends across every demographic, across every region, across every political party in the nation. Tell the politicians it’s time they caught up to the people that voted them in.

Put your name to the petition calling for equality now – and please share this campaign with all your friends. You can be sure that at least 70 per cent of them will thank you for it! You can also support this campaign by donating here.

AS some of you may be aware PFLAG Brisbane is planning a national advertisement campaign to call on the government to remove discrimination.

They are calling for donations so if anyone is interested there are two emails listed below with information. THe plan is to list the names of supportive families.

In conjunction with Getup its good to see the heat being put on for this issue !

=============================================

HI All,

You may recall last year that there was a plan to do an advertisement with families happy to use their name as a back drop to an advert supporting our lesbian daughters and gay sons.

Now with the HREOC findings out later this week recommending economic equality for same sex couples we are asking for families to donate $55 or more to show support not only for the recommendations but our sons and daughters as well.

If you are happy to do so would you let me know and send a cheque or money order to PFLAG, PO Box 1372 Eagle Farm. 4009

If you are lesbian or gay and know your parents would be happy to be involved please pass this email on to them.

The plan is to run the advert in the Australian, ideally on a Saturday in the early general news. We would like to have at least a 1/4 page but these cost approx. $5000. I am still getting a final quote.

IF you would like to speak to me about this please don’t hesitate to call my mob. is 0409-363-335

We need your support. Would you also pass this email on to your friends and contacts

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hi All,

I am guessing you have all received my emails about the PFLAG family advert.

I am just letting you know the date we have settled on, for the advert to go into the Australian will be the 13th Aug. This day is the 3rd anniversary of the day John Howard made it compulsory for the term “man and woman” to be used in any type of wedding ceremony conducted in this country. It’s also a day that parliament is sitting. So we hope this will have some impact.

For those who would still like to donate and have your name included I am resending details. For direct debit our a/c is Bank of Qld. bsb 124-001 a/c 2023-8607. If you do a direct debit please let me know the amount you have banked so I can keep track of how much money we have. If you are paying by cheque please write the cheque to PFLAG Brisbane Inc. and post to the address below. The more money the larger the advertisement.

I also need a permission slip so please post this to PO Box 1372, Eagle Farm 4009 or fax to 3852-5200

Also please let me know if you would like your full name eg. “fred flag” or prefer “flag family” or even if you would like to donate but remain anon. this is totally fine.

Shelley

Here’s my 2 cents worth on the Getup vote… thought I share it with you guys… I read it again and though darn I forgot to include christian elements which has its own discriminating factors. 😳

As a taxpayer, please do end the discrimination for us to access what is entitled to us. It isn’t about christian values or family values. Its about ending a frustrating period in our lives where we can have equality. My partner is from an era where Gay do not marry or walk down the street holding hands or kissing in public. But the hetrosexuals do it all the time. I won’t have that with my partner but I would like to see our young ones liberated from this era where they can feel good about themselves and have the right social support from the community and its government. Its not alot to ask for… really, apart from asking the Government to drop their arrogant pride and give us a chance to feel normal. Perhaps then we wont have to parade as much as we have been. Hmmmm

It would be great Craig if the discrimination on a Govt. level could end toward gays/lesbians, one day Im sure it will, but the flack being thrown at us wont ever subside completely since the general public will always have a group that will be anti-gay/lesbian. The blacks are accepted in every way in America and have been for many years but again in many other ways the discrimination is still there.

It seems to be human nature to put cruds on someone or a group and its been that way since the world began. Bloomin Satan had his input with that one, its his nature roll remember in the garden (paraphrase) “why should “GOD” be the only one who knows EVERYTHING?????” take a bite, go on, yum yum!!!! LoL

So even if yes things change on paper and that in itself will be great, people in general usually dont but as is happening already in many places people just dont batter an eyelid anymore.

Let’s face it, social and ecinomic rights for gay people are a logistical nightmare for the government. As homosexuality is not a psyciatric disease any longer and Australia’s constitution is based on a seperation between religion and politics (at least in theory) one of the main contributing factors preventing the Governemnt from legalising gay marriage is because it will redefine the whole concept of marriage and people will abuse it for tax benifits, health care and so on. It’s cheaper to live as a married couple in Australia than to live as a singer person. Your going to have best friends marrying, roomates, neighbours, imigrants who want a visa. I know its pathetic, but its fact. It happens enough in heterosexual marriages if we open them up who knows what will happen! Marriage will not be defined by its traditional boundaries as a sutible environment to bring up children (and this change to me is a needed one, marriage is so much more than that!). Marriahe will in essence be a social agreement based sometimkes on love, sometimes on children, sometimes on tax benifits and sometimes on a green card! It’s obvious to see that this is the reason the governement has not leaglised gay marriage, ‘commitment ceremonies’ are endorsed, its the rights that come with marriage that are the stumbling block, not so much a social stigma against gay people.

This of course doesn’t mean that what the government is doing is right, but again lets face it, one day gay people will have marriage rights worldwide, if western countries can legalise abortion then they can certainly legalise gay marriage, both were seen as criminal and to some still are, times change, politics change, the concept of rights and obligations change. All it takes is time.

Unfortunate but true, marriages are still, between heterosexual people as it has always been, sometimes for love, convenience, children, arranged, hardship, circumstance, for fun or for a green card. That has always existed and always will.

The legalisation of a gay/lesbian marriage will not change that in any way to be any better or worse.

Already two consenting adults of the opposite sex get married to cover up a gammet of things and for tax purposes. There is nothing new under the sun in regards to that.

The Govt. must have a better reason than that to be knocking back gay marriages, one that they single out being, that it should be between a man and a woman.

Ive known a few gay men to marry a lesbian girl to have kids and to be a cover for the family……so what will be new?
