Hi everyone,
Today, the Gay News Network (SX, MCV, Queensland Pride, etc) posted an article about the launch of our Perth Chapter on Friday 5 October. With less than 10 days remaining, it's exciting to see this in the press. Thanks to Serkan Ozturk and Gay News Network for the great article. 🙂
Go west: Freedom2b sets up in Perth
written by Serkan Ozturk – 27 September
LGBTI Christian advocacy and support group Freedom2b is one step closer to becoming a truly national organisation with the upcoming launch of a new chapter in Perth early next month.
Formed by Anthony Venn-Brown in Sydney back in 2005, the first ever meeting of Freedom2b took place in the former evangelist’s Surry Hills home.
Though Venn-Brown stepped down from running the organisation last June, from those early days Freedom2b now counts over 1,200 people as members of its online community and holds chapter meetings across Sydney, Melbourne and since last year in Brisbane as well.
The new Perth chapter will be launched on Friday, October 5 and will hold meetings every first Friday of each month at the Northbridge Piazza Community Building.
National Freedom2b president Michelle Kolev will be the special guest on the night.
The regular meetings will include guest speakers, DVDs and interesting discussions about issues surrounding faith, sexuality and gender identity.
Graham Douglas-Meyer and Bev Fabb will be the leaders of the Perth chapter, both of whom were inspired to start Freedom2b in Western Australia following on from their own experiences of reconciliation between their faith and sexuality.
Freedom2b vice president, Ben Gresham, said it was an exciting to be starting a new chapter.
“We look forward to this opportunity to connect with more people and offer support to those from a Christian background,” he added.
Gresham said the need for Freedom2b to have a presence in Western Australia was heightened following a raft of anti-gay comments by former tennis champion turned Perth evangelist Margaret Court earlier this year.
“Court has tried to tell people that they can’t be gay and Christian and has held several meetings at her church against marriage equality,” Gresham said.
“Freedom2b is here not only to support LGBTI people from Christian backgrounds but also to challenge the anti-gay message that some churches are preaching and work with them towards a more loving, affirming and inclusive approach.”
