I am a Christian mum to 2 daughters, both of whom are straight. I have battled with the Church view on homosexuality and what I have viewd for myself in the world, I had a cousin who died at the age of 47, from a heart attack. He was one of the first gay’s that contacted HIV in New Zealand. I could never reconcile the view that being gay is a choice or environemtal factors when my cousin was definitely effeminate from the age of 2, but back then and even in the late 1960’s early 70’s when I was in bible college with Tony and at Paradise with him, I had no idea of homosexuality or that it existed. In retrospect I suspect that one of my uncles was gay. He was also effeminate and never married.

Just recently one of my daughter’s friends outed himslef as gay and I have tried to get him to see that he can be Christian and gay.

I joined this forum as I want you all to know that not all ‘straight’ Christians are judgemental.

Welcome, Shirlmo. 🙂

Most people here have a pretty good idea that not all straight people are judgemental, but your support is certainly much appreciated. 😀

I hope everything works out okay for your daughter’s friend. Is he/was he a Christian already? Or are you just trying to convince him that not all Christians are necessarily hostile towards the GLBTI community? If he’s already a Christian you could always refer him here or to somewhere like the Gay Christian Network for support.

Either way, you’re doing an exceptional work and I hope you succeed in sharing Jesus’ love with someone who needs it. 🙂

God bless,

– William

Ditto with all the above Shirlmo. its always great to see people pop up in this forum who are heterosexual. Its probably even more important that people like yourself speak up than us. When we speak up about being GLB and have a relationship with God……its not uncommon to be accused of justifying our ‘sin’.

When a heterosexual speaks up they can’t be accused of the same agenda.

Hope that your gay friend finds his way here……its a safe welcoming space. A space to share and explore……where people really understand the issues re faith and sexuality.

my friend already is a Christian and I am trying to persuade him to give this a go and visit a chapter. He unfortunately at the moment figures he cannot be a Christian and gay. When he outed himself his mother told him he was an abomination to the Lord 😥 and that has done a fair bit of damage as you can imagine. He will be 21 in july and has dabbled with bi-sexuality but has in recent months discovered he is gay. I really feel for him and his confusion.

Hi shirlmo.

When I read that sentence, I just wanted to make the sad face about 20 times bigger. The little emoticon seems far too small to hold the depth of sadness of a mother saying something like that to her son. I feel so blessed that my own mother didn’t have that kind of reaction when I came out… and so sad that your friend wasn’t as blessed.

Freedom 2b[e] does include people who aren’t active in the church but have a Christian background. So you might want to let him know we’re not going force him to be all happy-clappy if he’s not so inclined. It’s just a place where we will understand where he’s coming from, because we understand how DIFFICULT it can be to match up being Christian with being gay.

You are right Orfeo……that was a cruel thing for a parent to say……but then I often wonder who we can blame in these situations. If we have been brought up with particular beliefs in a certain culture then that is all we have to go by. that is why most of us used to believe we were going to hell.

If in doubt about what we are about or who is welcome here please check out the target market doc.

Hi Shirlmo,

Welcome to F2B and thank you for your vote of support, and for the support you’re offering to your friend who has recently come out. It is sad that his mother was not exactly affirming of him when he came out, but wonderful that he has someone like you ‘in his corner.’

Bless you!

Welcome shirlmo. God bless you.

Please ,please let your daughters friend know that God loves him. That Jesus died for him.

It is man who judges on the outside.God looks on the heart and God is love.

Most of us have been to the place that he is at the moment . We have been hurt by man .

Jesus told us to love our brother as ourselves. That covers all of the church but some seem to forget that.

🙂 God bless you again and keep in there
