WALKING BETWEEN WORLDS

Working Effectively with GLBT People from Faith Backgrounds

“I relate to most of what you say here…a few times I have thought it would be easier to kill myself and have tried hard to do this, ending up in hospital more than once…there has to be a better way“ Minnie 38, mother, Christian, struggling to reconcile faith and sexuality. (Comment on Anthony Venn-Brown’s blog April 22, 2010)

GLBT People of Faith

GLBT people of faith and religion exist in or have experienced two worlds often intensely opposed to each other. They experience the usual issues of resolving their sexuality or gender identity, coming out, finding their place in the community and learning what it means to live authentically in a predominately straight world. They often however, experience these things with greater intensity and have additional issues to deal with.

Many have invested years attempting to conform to heterosexuality through secret struggles, heterosexual relationships, ‘ex-gay’ style counselling and programs; leaving them damaged and traumatised. Fragmentation and compartmentalisation of self as well as internalised homophobia are common experiences.

How can we assist and support them on their journey to reconcile faith and/or sexuality?

Half Day Seminar

This practical, three session training program provides an in-depth look into the world of LGBT people of faith; understanding contexts, identifying the issues and tools to assist them on the journey to reconcile faith and/or sexuality. There will also be opportunities for discussion and questions.

The program is highly relevant to GLBT community workers, social workers, mental health professionals, school counsellors, chaplains and GLBT liaison officers.
