Delaware has just become the 11th USA State to bring in Marriage equality

http://thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/breaking-delaware-passes-same-sex-marriage-into-law/politics/2013/05/07/66581

So now the following countries have Marriage equality (or Laws on the books which will shortly activate)

Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Uruguay

Parts of Brazil (now over 60% of Brazilians have access to marriage equality in their own state), Mexico, and the United States (now 11 states as of last night)

Same Sex marriage has been passed in France – but the law is on hold pending a constitutional Challenge

Laws for Same Sex Marrage are under debate in the following countries

Andorra, Colombia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Nepal, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom,

Have we reached a tipping point. Is it now – as some conservatives in the USA are saying – inevitable – or not ( its worth noting that LGBTI rights were rolled Backwards under the current QLD government….)

We have discussed this before – but the momentum is picking up speed around the world. What do people think ?

Looks like it MAY be Minnesota next

http://swampland.time.com/2013/05/10/minnesota-senate-next-stop-for-gay-marriage-bill/

Supporters already are celebrating the Minnesota House’s passage of a measure to legalize gay marriage, but there are a few more steps before it gets to Gov. Mark Dayton’s desk.

“It’s not time to uncork the champagne yet. But it’s chilling,” Rep. Steve Simon, DFL-Hopkins, said at a spirited rally in the Capitol rotunda a few minutes after the House voted 75-59 to let same-sex couples start getting married in Minnesota come Aug. 1.

The state Senate is scheduled to vote on the bill Monday, and leaders expect it to pass there too.

And an interesting Comment by a Labor MP

Pilbrow, a Pentecostal Christian, told the Goulburn Post that he saw no problem with allowing same-sex couples to marry and said the current law interfered with the separation of church and state.

‘The issue with the current Marriage Act is that the state has its fingers inside churches,’ Pilbrow told the paper.

THis would be more in line with the reality – as the Legal recognition of marriage – and the churches recognition already DONT mesh. For example – There are are a number of situations in the area of divorce and marrying people who have been dovorced or from other denominations – that various churches DONT RECOGNISE the same set of rules NOW that the state does – …. (so the state my recogonise your marriage but the church wont.) Its time to recorgnise this and formally seperate Legal marriage from churge recognition of marriage.

And now – there are 12 USA states

http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-minnesota-same-sex-marriage-20130513,0,7085738.story

Minnesota is poised to become the 12th state to legalize same-sex marriage as the state Senate approved legislation Monday, flooding the Capitol building with cheers from supporters.

Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton announced that he would sign the bill Tuesday afternoon. Once he does, Minnesota will be the first Midwestern state to legalize the practice by legislative vote. (Iowa's Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in 2009.)

Rose Nyland in the Golden Girls came from Minnesota (does anyone rember the St Olaf jokes?). They were made to sound quiant, old fashioned and backward. Obviously, they have a lot to teach Australians – or at least our politicians on both sides, when it comes to justice and human rights.

@ Jamesn

Im not sure – as I havent yet seen any academic research on this – but the polls in the media (which are not quite so trustworthy but can be helpful if u you at the questions and the details like WHO they asked carefully) do suggest that in many places across the world – Including a number of states in the USA and here – attitudes are changing.

So whereas polls which showed majority of people against Marriage equality a few years ago – are now showing the same number or more for it.

Some caveats to that (and please note – Im not saying this is good or bad – Im merely noting that this is a process that happens and is used by liberal and conservative, left and right wing, etc etc – its a form of marketing – and its pretty ubiquitous now . Im not making a judgement on it in anyway. Merely notinge that the language has changed – a sign of the "culture war" that are waging over this issue. A classic sign of that is the language used in the media. There are a number of very good books on the subject on how as issues are politicised the language is altered to make it more acceptable to the public – and often to obsfucate some of the issues. Im sure people can think of other examples) The older polls would have asked people about Gay Marriage. Now they are asking people about Marriage equality. The the question being asking has changed (in language and thats NOT insignificant.

However – having said that – I personally think there is a swing towards acceptance in this area. Thats my perceptions…

So I think your comment " or at least our politicians on both sides" is spot on ….

The population – has generally moved on – or enough of them to make this now not enough of a wedge issue to win or lose on… BUT but with the power so finely balanced in Canberra – it seems there are two points enough to topple a leader of either party…. Marriage Equality and / or Climate change.
