G’day all!
It’s been a while since I’ve actually posted. I’ve been traipsing around the country doing shows so it’s been a little bit crazy.
I’ve also been busy lately organising a wedding. My wedding. 🙂 After five and a half years, Petey and I have finally got around to tying the knot.
It’s been a long journey since we got to know each other in the church, worked through our orientation and came to a place of peace with God. And we’re pretty excited about getting married tomorrow.
Pete’s Dad is a pastor and wedding celebrant and he has agreed to take the service which is wonderful. He’s going to speak from a biblical perspective about love and commitment and hopefully answer the question of ‘why get married?’ that everyone seems to be asking.
We’ve gone out of our way to answer the question as simply as we know how. “Because we love each other.” A lot of people have said, “If it’s not legal, what’s the point?” And we’ve said, “Because we love each other.” If a marriage needs a piece of paper to hold it together then it’s pretty much destined for failure isn’t it? We’re not getting married to make a political point (as some people have suggested), we’re not getting married to make ourselves feel better, we’re not even getting married to get presents! We’re getting married for the same reason most other couples get married, because we love each other. Pretty simple really.
I’m most excited because our wedding has brought together gay christians, straight christians, gay non-christians, straight non-christians, heads of Christian organisations, gay ambassadors (avb!), ex girlfriends, and people who have never had anything to do with God in their lives. All of them together in one place celebrating love, irrelevant of gender, and hearing about what God has done in our lives. I think that’s wonderful and certainly, five years ago I would never have DREAMED it was possible. Isn’t God nice?
So I suppose, I’m writing this to give hope to people. To let people know that our story is not exactly special. It happens everyday. Sometimes as gay people we think that a life of love and peace and acceptance isn’t possible, but God’s big, anything’s possible. Just because it’s sometimes more difficult, doesn’t mean it has to completely paralyse our life. Freedom comes when we begin to accept ourselves, then others will follow.
Just wanted to say a BIG thankyou to the F2be’ers who chipped in for flowers. Petey and I were chuffed! They have pride of place in our house. And Mags, you’re beautiful. Hopefully we’ll meet face to face one day soon.
