Taking the plunge:

OK I am thinking that I will try again with the whole being in church thing. I have found a Wesleyan Methodist Church that is not far from my home and meets on Sunday afternoons at 4:30 so I am going to go and test the waters next Sunday.

I’ve been reading, and hearing a lot, lately here on F2B and in other places that people of faith who are Gay need to be out there in the churches, having the difficult conversations, demonstrating that it is possible to be gay and love God, too.

It’s scary and I don’t know how it will all work out, but I have decided I need to at least try, and since the Methodist church was the first one I ever attended this seems like a good place to start. I don’t think I can truly re-embrace the pentecostal movement at this point.

I’m not going to ‘give’ a lot of information about myself, initially, but play it by ear and decide when and how I should reveal myself. I won’t lie, but I won’t just spill my guts either.

Here I go…

Querido Hermana Meg,

You will be in my prayers, Myfanwe. I hope that everything goes well!

(Tell them if they don’t treat you right, you’ve got a big scary Cuban cousin who will make them sorry!) J)

Yours in Christ,

Raul

Well, I went and I survived LOL. The pastor and his wife were the first two people to greet me at the door, so that was different to some other churches I have been to in the past. The people were friendly as country folks usually are, but not overly gushy or in my face, which suited me just fine.

One thing I have to say is that the methodist church has really changed since I was last attending one (circa 1968).

All in all, it was a positive experience. They don’t know much about me yet, of course, but I think I will go again.

I am just taking things slowly. Baby steps.

Hey Meg,

Glad you had a great experience. its amazing how much fear can keep us from doing things. We try to protect ourselves from letting ourselves be hurt all over again, but its this protection that is also keeping us from what God wants us to do. It’s great that you are overcoming your past and creating yourself a new future.
